An Evansville City Council member spends part of the holiday weekend in jail. Councilman John Friend was arrested while boating on Kentucky Lake in Marshall County.
He tells Eyewitness News he was boating with three clients. They were anchored in a cove, where they planned to have dinner and spend the evening. Friend says he lost power to his generator just as severe weather rolled into the area. He says his guests asked him to go back to the port, so he started piloting the boat to shore.
On the way there, he says he was pulled over for driving without boat lights, which he believes lost power when his generator died. He was taken into custody after submitting to a breathalizer test.
He calls the incident ‘regrettable’.
“I was just entertaining clients out there,” says Friend. “I obviously had maybe a couple too many drinks, maybe one or two too many and not really realizing that.”
Friend tells eyewitness news driving a boat while intoxicated in Kentucky does not carry the same weight as a DUI.
“[I was] concerned about the weather around me,” he says. “And the conditions we were involved in at that time.”
It’s an infraction that carries a $200 fine for first time offenders.
