Evansville events will close a lot of roads

News

Thousands of people will descend on downtown Evansville this weekend, but there may not a lot of room to drive. You can expect to see plenty of closed roads around the city.

Locust Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Ninth Avenue is closed until Saturday night for the first-ever Taco Festival between Old National Events Plaza and Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union building.

Also, Main Street from Sixth to MLK will be closed for an event with Signature School.

The Evansville half-marathon will have a chunk of the city blocked off 2 p.m. Saturday. Many roads west of Highway 41 and south of the Lloyd Expressway will be closed, along with roads around Garvin Park.

There’s also the Jason Aldean concert at Ford Center, the University of Evansville “fun run,” Central High School Music Boosters fundraiser, and New Tech Institute 5K Thunderbolt Flight.

They will all have some roads closed, and while it may be a headache, some are glad to see so much to do.

“It’s a revolution,” says Taco Festival organizer, Joe Notter, “we’re just starting to get in line with the rest of the country and I’m glad to be around that, whatever we can do to help grow Evansville and make it more of an attraction.”

Drivers will also have to deal with construction on the Twin Bridges, work around the new medical school downtown, and closed ramps at the I-64 and I-69 interchange.

“The downtown is very cute, I see a lot of building and revitalization projects around town,” Jennieke Latimore says, but “some of it’s a little annoying; they might be doing construction on one street but then there will be several surrounding streets where no work is being done.”

It is a busy weekend and police want to remind everyone to keep your eyes on the road, slow down, and be patient.
