Evansville Police investigating murder, name of victim released

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — Evansville Police are searching for a murder suspect following an early morning shooting Tuesday.

Police said the shooting happened early Tuesday morning at 1:40 in the 100 block of West Oregon Street.

Officers tell Eyewitness News the victim was shot at a home, during what’s being described to us as a house party. The person who called police reported hearing six or seven shots.

Neighbors tell Eyewitness News they estimate around 50 people were in the front yard of the home when they heard gun shots. They initially thought they may have been fireworks.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital, but later died. The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office and the Evansville Police Department confirm 30-year-old Larry Wayne Merriweather Jr. is the victim in the shooting.  An autopsy is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said several people at the scene directed officers inside a home on West Oregon where Merriweather Jr. was lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers have spent Tuesday morning trying to hunt down a suspect, but so far, there have been no arrests.
