Evansville woman avoids falling victim to scam with a twist


EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – An Evansville woman avoids falling victim to a scam with a concerning twist.

The 83-year-old told police a man going ‘James Shapiro called and said — she won the Publishers Clearing House.

But she had to pay $4,500 for the prize.

Shapiro told her to go to Office Depot since she didn’t have an email and print off documents.

The woman said Shapiro refused to go inside the store and wanted to meet outside.

Concerned, the woman called her son who called police.

The officer said this was the first report he’s taken of a scammer wanting to meet a victim.

Still, police do not believe the suspect is from the area.
