Evansville’s Indiana Black Expo hosts 25th school supply giveaway

EVANSVILLE, In. (WEHT) — Back-to-school is right around the corner, and on Saturday, kids in Evansville received some free school supplies to get them off to a good start.

The Evansville chapter of the Indiana Black Expo hosted a “Back to School” giveaway at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

The organization receives grants to purchase the school supplies, which are given to the community during the giveaway.

This is the Expo’s 25th year for the giveaway, and organizers say the reactions make it all worth it.

“I get so thrilled when you hear the kids immediately tell you ‘thank you.,’ says youth director Berdena Walden-McGill. “And then it’s also a pleasure when you hear the parents say, ‘did you say thank you?’ And they’ll even often tell you, ‘thanks I hope you’re blessed this year.'”

The event ran from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday.
