Fall Festival provides perfect environment for training police dogs

News

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Local law enforcement work to make sure everyone down here at the Fall Festival stays safe.

And it provides a perfect environment for training.

The Evansville Police Department is training one of its newest bomb-sniffing dogs named Luna.

She’s a one-year-old Belgium Malinois from the Netherlands.

Officers are letting her walk up and down West Franklin Street, sniffing booths and getting her used to the crowds.

“Definitely, this is distracting. I mean you got people everywhere, you got food everywhere, you’ve got food on the ground, but this is great experience for her. We’re lucky to have this once a year to be able to train our dogs to get used to this because this is what she’ll be doing. She’ll be working events like this for the department and the City of Evansville.”

EPD says Luna should be certified soon and be able to hit the streets in the near future.
