The FBI is getting involved in last week’s shooting in Evansville.

Agents are looking into whether Crystal Cash was shot in the head as part of a hate crime.

Police say the alleged shooter, Gerald Lewis, claimed to be part of a group called Israel United in Christ that’s linked to a known hate group, Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ.

Cash told police Lewis yelled an anti-gay slur after shooting her.

Now, federal investigators will assemble a case file then hand it off to the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the Assistant US Attorney.

The attorney will decide if charges or an indictment is necessary.

Lewis is being held on $5 million bond and is due in court Friday afternoon.
