Today is National Dump the Pump Day. The American Public Transportation System Association encourages drivers to give their car a rest and use public transportation instead.

Evansville officials say the public transit system has been on a steady rise. It is hard to say if any Tri-Staters actually dumped the pump today and rode the bus. Several people said they are frequent users of public transportation.

“The way the economy is going with gas prices steadily going up,” said Robert Williams of Evansville, “even if I had a car and had a significant route to work, I would still catch the bus.”

The American Public Transportation Association says public transportation saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually. The average bus fare in Evansville is $1, with the average price of a gallon of gas is around $3.60.
