Fire destroys Henderson apartment building

News

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – An early morning fire destroyed an apartment building in Henderson. The department says it’s Henderson’s largest structure fire in more than a decade.

Just before 1 a.m. Saturday morning, the Henderson Fire Department was called to a fire at Weaverton Apartments on Atkinson Street.

The first fire crew to arrive saw heavy fire in two second floor apartments which they say quickly spread to the entire roof and attic.

Because of heavy smoke, we’re told the visibility was so bad that residents could not find their way out without assistance. The department says firefighters helped people get out of the building and that no one was injured.

Fire officials said damage to the 20 apartment building is severe and it will have to be razed. Officials say they do not know how many people are displaced at this time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
