A bill in the Illinois Senate wants to make sure criminals pay up for what they stole.
About 20,000 people complained to the attorney general about scams and fraud last year, but victims can only file civil cases if the scammer is convicted.
Lawmakers say this new bill will protect the state’s most vulnerable citizens and give them a chance to get their money back regardless if criminal charges are filed.
Sen. Jason Barickman says, “This really closes a loophole that allowed scammers to take advantage of some of our elderly. It came from an issue that a constituent of mine had.”
The bill now heads back to the house for a vote.
Bill sponsors are confident the proposal will have a positive outcome.
