INDOT hosts public hearing on U.S. 231 project

Update (8:50 p.m.)

SPENCER COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) – INDOT hosted a public forum to update residents on some major changes coming to a busy intersection.

The intersection at State Road 70 and County Road 800 North in Spencer County is known for danger.

After repeated accidents, INDOT is stepping in to make the intersection safer.

The plan will add two “J turns” otherwise known as “median U-turns” to prevent direct crossing over four lanes of traffic.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021 and will prevent left turns from the minor roadways connecting to U.S. 231.

INDOT officials say while there is no way to eliminate accidents all together, but this plan would reduce the severity of a crash in the event that one occurs.

Tiller says the design plan is not final and can still be modified based on concerns brought up by the public.

If you would like to submit any comments about the design, call INDOT customer service at 855-463-6848.
