UPDATE: Investigation underway at Cardinal Mine following employee’s death

UPDATE: We now know the name of the employee of the mine who died Thursday at the mine. Jeremy Elder, 39 of Providence, Kentucky was pronounced dead at 4:45 pm. His body is being taken to Louisville where an autopsy will be performed.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (WEHT) – An investigation is underway after an employee died at Cardinal Mine in Madisonville.

The incident happened Thursday around 2:45 p.m.

According to the company, the employee was found unresponsive near a battery-powered scoop located inside the mine.

First responders tried to resuscitate the miner, but were unsuccessful.

The worker was pronounced dead around 4:45 p.m.

State and federal agencies were notified about the incident.

An investigation by those agencies and Warrior Coal, LLC are ongoing.

The employee has not been identified at this time.

The company released a statement:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we ask you to join us in extending support to this miner’s family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time.
