JASPER, Ind. (WEHT) — To celebrate Earth Day, the City of Jasper hosted its annual Tree Giveaway Wednesday.
The coronavirus outbreak forced this year’s event to be drive up only, but that didn’t stop the crowds.
Long lines showed up early, ready to pick up seedlings. They were limited to six per person.
The event started at 9 a.m., and the city tells us their stock of 1,100 seedlings barely made it to 10 a.m.
“The way we had it done with the car pick up in the car, people didn’t have to get out of their cars. We might do it in the future like this the same. There were a couple hundred cars backed up, so we had to turn away a lot of people that wanted them,” Rob Gutgsell with Jasper Parks and Recreation said.
This year’s seedlings from the state nursery included several species — including red and white oaks, sugar maple, sycamore and more.
