KENTUCKY (CNN) – Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul says it should be a president’s choice whether to release their tax returns.
“That’s a private thing and it’s based on anonymity. Now people say, well, presidents should release it. Well, yeah. But that’s their choice, and if the public doesn’t like it, the public will punish him. I think it’s a terrible idea for the courts to force anybody to release their tax returns.”
Sen. Paul’s comments came after a federal judge dismissed a President Donald Trump lawsuit to stop his tax returns from being turned over to a New York Grand Jury.
President Trump broke with tradition by not releasing his tax returns to the American public after the 2016 election.
But the recent ruling raises the likelihood that Trump’s tax returns will be provided.
