LEWISPORT, Ky. (WEHT) – A large employer in Hancock County has made the decision to suspend production for at least 15 days.
In a statement, a representative with Aleris tells Eyewitness News the Lewisport plant will suspend production effective Sunday, May 10. The anticipation is for the restart of production at the facility to begin on Tuesday, May 26.
The move is in response to major automotive customers of Aleris delaying the restart of their production lines and continued lower aluminum demand in other markets. The statement released to Eyewitness News says the issues are due to COVID-19.
Aleris adds it is difficult to say with exact certainty when operating scheduled will return to normal, though the anticipation is for the production restart to happen on May 26.
As far as how workers are being affected, a representative says:
“We are doing everything we can to minimize the impact on our employees and Aleris remains fully committed to the safety of our workforce, and the long-term success of the Lewisport facility as well as the local community.”
