Bat house in Gibson Co. designed to combat mosquito problem

Local News

GIBSON COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) – A Gibson County man has a plan to combat mosquitoes by building a bat house.

Mike Wathen lives in the Owensville area and says he’s tired of all the mosquitoes especially at night.

So, he contacted a company called bigbathouses.com.

Workers brought one of its bat houses from Kansas and installed it on Wathen’s property.

It can house 5,000 to 10,000 bats at a time.

“Across the nation on a national scale, we’re talking about billions of bugs getting consumed probably every night. One bat can consume like 2,000 insects a night, so they’re very, very efficient at eating flying insects.”

Steve Barlow says incidents of bats with rabies are low and that any mammal can have the virus.
