Big boiler arrives at Hawesville mill Tuesday

An auxiliary boiler weighing more than 250,000 lbs. makes its way to the Domtar Mill, west of Hawesville.

The boiler is 45 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 15.5 feet tall. It was put on its side, and transported through Hawesville and Highway 60 to the mill, using a 96-wheel trailer, controlled by remote control.

Company officials say it arrived just after noon on Tuesday and be installed Wednesday. Four cranes from Lousville will be brought in to install it.

The auxiliary boiler will be used as a backup system for steam at the mill to keep it running at full capacity. It took four weeks for a barge carrying it to go from Houston, and up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.
