EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Back to school time is here! It’s a time that is met with excitement, fresh starts, and the thought that sits in the back of every parent’s mind: is my child going to be safe at school?
A sad sign of the times is that there is actually a need for bulletproof backpacks.
Those are heavy words to take in, especially because when you think of backpacks, you think of children.
School shootings are happening every year and they don’t seem to be slowing down.
And then there are the mass shootings that recently took place in El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and in Las Vegas in 2017.
Even though these types of backpacks don’t get to the root of the problem, if you ever find yourself in an active shooter situation, they could save your life or your child’s life.
Eyewitness News called several stores in the area to see if any local stores were selling bulletproof backpack. Office Depot is at least one local store actually selling the item.
Associates from two different Office Depots said they weren’t selling many at all, though. They believed the price was the reason.
They cost around $100.
