Castle High School’s Band Director Tom Dean has been named the recipient of the “Outstanding Bandmaster Award” from the Gamma Chapter, Phi Beta Mu.

The award is going to be presented to Dean at the Indiana Bandmasters All State Band Concert.

Phi Beta Mu is an international band director’s fraternity. It was created to encourage the building of better bands, the development of better musicians in schools throughout the world, and to foster a deep appreciation of good music.

There is only one director selected as “Outstanding Bandmaster” each year.

Dean was named the Head Director at Castle High School in 1994.

Under his leadership, the Castle High School wind ensemble has been named an ISSMA State Finalist 14 times and has been selected to perform at the Indiana Music Educator’s Convention.

The marching band has been named an Indiana Class A State Finalist 15 times, was a 2016 Bands of America Grand National Finalist, and was awarded the 2016 Sudler Shield Award from the John Phillip Sousa Foundation.
