Church holds family firearm event to address gun safety

A Posey County Church offered local families an unusual option for a family outing that involved faith and firearms.

The church offered a gun safety event from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. Saturday, but it was much more than just a seminar or speaker.

All the guns you see at this event were used under the supervision of a professional or unloaded and secured.

“They could come out here, pick up any gun that they wanted to, one person one shooter, two shooters per table, just shooting and enjoying the firearm,” said senior minister Baret Fawbush.

The day focused primarily on safety.

“Kids starting at a young age, if they’re not like “Oooooo it’s a gun! I’ve never seen one!’ They’re not going to be so willing to play with it unitentionally,” said event volunteer Dierdre Degravina.

The day offered bounce houses, food trucks and roleplaying about what to do if you see a gun at a friend’s house.

“You teach them, don’t touch a gun or always pretend it’s loaded, if you always think it’s loaded you’re never going to point it at your friends,” said Degravina.

Experienced shooters were armed with knowledge to help those just starting out.

“We had a few people who had never shot guns before weren’t real familliar, so they got to see them, interact with people who have a lot of experience with guns,” said Jeff Brown, who co-organized the event.

Fawbush says  the idea came from a higher power:

“I get ideas from Jesus,” he laughed.

And while there were plenty of targets down range but the big target: A good time.

“The sounds of bullets hitting steel, and just everybody having fun.”

Fawbush says the real reason behind the event was to extend an invite to Old Union Christian Church  for Easter morning service.
