ROCKPORT, Indiana (WEHT) -A historical tavern and bed and breakfast built in the 1850’s is expected to reopen in Spencer County.
The Rockport Inn closed in 2018 after a fire left severe damages to the building.
Like any other historical building, the Rockport Inn had a lot of memories.
Some people in the area say they are excited for the business to be restored.
While others hope some aspects of the bed and breakfast went away with the flames.
It didn’t take long for word to get around that Rockport Inn would soon be back in business.
In April 2018, the owners were forced to close the doors after a fire that started at the back of the building left damages to the basement, kitchen and even collapsed part of the floor.
“It was a shame and it was a loss for the town and it’s a relief that they’re putting it back together,” says Rockport Police Lieutenant Josh Knoy.
Knoy says he recalls going to the inn’s McKenzie’s pub before it went up in flames.
“You know, I go there for lunch or dinner, and they were always really good to us as well as the service and staff over there.”
Although some people are thrilled the old business is being brought back to life, some people say they are happy the inn caught fire due to the rumored paranormal activity associated with the bed and breakfast.
“Generally there’s some you know spirit activity or hauntings going on over there, says Knoy.
“I’ve heard all the stories and they’re just really exciting and interesting stories to say the least, and I guess some people really follow that.”
What some people may not know is the Rockport Inn made the list of top seven haunted hotels in Indiana.
We’ll see if it makes that list once again once it’s been restored.
