Consultants present cost estimates, possible plans for Vanderburgh jail expansion

Local News

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The Vanderburgh County Jail is a hot topic at Wednesday’s county council meeting.

Consultants said Wednesday that construction costs of a 20-year plan to alleviate jail overcrowding would be $89.1 million.

The second option, a 10-year plan, comes with a roughly $30 million price tag, but does not include rehabilitation or expanded medical options.

Overcrowding has been an issue for the current jail on Harlan Ave.

The overcrowding often requires people to be incarcerated in surrounding counties, which comes at a cost to Vanderburgh County.
