Couple dies in overnight house fire in Union County

Local News

UNION COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) – The Union County Coroner’s Office says an elderly couple died in a house fire early Tuesday morning.

Several fire departments were called to a house fire in Grove Center at 1:46 a.m. This is near Sturgis. Firefighters say the house was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Due to the intensity of the fire, crews were not able to rescue the couple.

The coroner’s office was later called to the scene once the fire was partially under control, and the victims were removed from the home. They’ve been identified as Joseph Sheffer, 86, and his wife Joann Sheffer, 81. The two bodies were transported to the Medical Examiner’s office in Madisonville.

The Kentucky Fire Marshall and the Union County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating what caused the fire.
