The coroner has identified 35-year-old Kelly Brey and her 8-year-old daughter Abigail along with her 7-year-old friend Katie Hodskins that were killed in a crash Tuesday morning.
Around 12:30 AM Tuesday, Bill Adams heard a sound.
“I heard, like a squeal, like somebody putting on their brakes, and two bangs,” he recalled. He later saw what caused it and called 911 on a sight he didn't want to see.
“I was awful scared when I went down there,” Adams recalled. "I went down to the road and shined a light down that way, and I'd seen half of a vehicle sticking out on the road. ran back in to the house, got on my cell phone.
”Daviess County Sheriffs Deputies say the SUV Kelly Brey and the two children were in went off road and struck three trees. The road was closed for four hours while investigators were on scene. Investigators say alcohol and the weather are not believed to be factors at this time, but that none of them were wearing their seat belts. Sheriffs deputies and Owensboro Police are working together to determine how the vehicle went off the road.
"We'll gather all the data, sit down as a group, and we'll try to find out what the cause was of the collision,” says Cpl. Tyler Free.
“That's the bad thing about it,” adds Adams, reacting to the accident. “With it being so close to Christmas, and two of them were children."
Abigail and Katie were students at Country Heights Elementary School. Daviess County Public School officials say grief counselors will be available for anyone who knew the victims.
