Arson suspect allegedly tried to get into home before setting fire, said his ‘girlfriend’ was being held against her will

EVANSVILLE, Ind (WEHT) – One man is being charged with arson after a house fire on E Iowa Street. The fire happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to a police report, Nikolas Jordan told police that his girlfriend was in the upstairs apartment cooking potato cakes for the two of them when the fire happened. Jordan says he was at a friend’s house at the time.

Another person who was in the house when the fire started told police Jordan had been banging on the doors trying to get in. According to the witness, Jordan said his girlfriend was in the basement and she was being held against her will and that those who lived at the home didn’t know the evil that was in the house.

When police questioned the girlfriend, she said she had not been at the house in the past four days after breaking up with Jordan. She said Jordan had been very upset about the breakup.

The house has a lot of smoke and water damage. Officials are investigating the fire as arson.
