Pigeon Creek bridge in Evansville on southbound 41 closed

Local

Update:

An INDOT official says crews will return to the bridge Wednesday to perform a detailed inspection. A preliminary inspection took place Tuesday night, but crews had to suspend inspections due to no daylight. Jason Tiller with INDOT says preliminary inspections “do not look good.”

Indiana State Police Sergeant Todd Ringle says the oversized truck’s escort missed it’s turn onto Lynch Road and kept heading south over the bridge. The escort’s pole hit the bridge, so the driver radioed the truck to not proceed. However, the truck driver did not hear the radio and proceeded south, hitting the bridge.

Original Story:

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The Pigeon Creek Bridge on Highway 41 is expected to remain closed through the morning rush on Wednesday.

That’s after a vehicle with an oversized load hit the bridge Tuesday afternoon.

INDOT officials say engineers need to inspect the damage to determine what repairs need to be made.

Traffic is currently being diverted onto Diamond Avenue.

That bridge reopened to traffic just last summer following several months of repairs.
