EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Police said they caught a man stealing a catalytic converter from a commercial truck.

Police believe 34-year-old Edward Lee Payne Jr. may be responsible for other thefts of catalytic converters.

Police said they saw Payne walk to the parking lot of a commercial cleaning service, Hasgoe, and crawl under a work vehicle.

Payne was seen under the vehicle while detectives heard what they believe to be a reciprocating saw, police said.

Over the course of two days, on December 15 and 16, Payne was seen working under the vehicle before emerging from the vehicle on December 16 with the catalytic converter.

Police said Payne was arrested shortly after.

If you have any knowledge of the alleged theft or were a victim of a stolen catalytic converter, call police at 812-436-7979 or the WeTip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.
