EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT/AP) — The Hilton DoubleTree in downtown Evansville laid off 76 employees after “the unforeseeable, dramatic downturn in business and occupancy caused by the coronavirus natural disaster.” The hotel is connected to Ford Center.
According to a letter sent to Mayor Lloyd Winnecke from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the mass layoff is expected to be temporary.
Layoffs were completed by March 25.
The Associated Press reports revenue has collapsed at restaurants, hotels, movie theaters, gyms and airlines nationwide. During one week in March, nearly 3.3 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week — almost five times the previous record set in 1982. The U.S. Travel Association — which represents 15.8 million workers — has forecast a loss of 5.9 million jobs in the industry by the end of April.
