Just months after a racist photo taken by EVSC middle school students surfaced, the City of Evansville launches an initiative to help prevent racism.

EVSC Superintendent Dr.David Smith asked the City of Evansville to respond after three Helfrich Park middle school students took a Snapchat appearing to be hanging a black baby doll, the picture  was shared by thousands of people on social media.

The first discussion was held Thursday night at Ivy Tech Community College.

Those in attendance viewed the documentary Not Our Town,a film on community response to hate crimes.

“Sometimes they will be uncomfortable discussions” said Mayor Lloyd Winnecke “at the end of the day if we are not talking to each other we are not talking and understanding our fellow neighbors then we are not growing as a community.”

This is expected to be the first of four discussions in 2018.
