EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — Wednesday, March 6, 2020 kicks off National Nurses Week and Eyewitness News spoke with Mary Nguyen to find out more about what it’s like battling COVID-19 on the front lines.

Nguyen is an Evansville native and a traveling certified registered nurse anesthetist. Now, she’s helping battle COVID-19 in Manhattan. After seeing things become more severe in March and case numbers spike, she says she knew her expertise dealing with anesthesiology and the respiratory system would be useful in the heart of New York City where the virus had impacted so many lives.

“Sometimes I experience mixed feelings when people refer to us as heroes. I understand the context, it’s very kind to say, but truly a lot of us, we all say the same thing. We’re just doing our job, we’re just doing what’s right, we’re doing what we know best and that is to care for our neighbor,” said Nguyen.

Nguyen previously worked in the Cardiac I-C-U in Deaconess Hospital in Evansville for 8 years where she was named nurse of the year for 2014. Nguyen wants to wish all her fellow nurses a Happy Nurses Week!
