EFD: ‘Child playing with fire’ and ‘electrical issue’ causes for Monday’s fires

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — Evansville firefighters battled two fires on the city’s south side Monday night.

Crews were called to Apostolic Word of Truth on Crane Avenue around 8 p.m. Firefighters say someone passing by saw the fire and called 911.

Crews managed to contain the fire to the attic and put it out quickly.

The initial report from the investigator is that the fire was accidental, and caused by an an electrical issue.

Just before 9 p.m., another call came in about a second fire at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of Van Park.

Crews say they located the fire in a second floor apartment closet, but there was heavy smoke damage in other areas of the apartment.

The initial report from the Evansville Fire Department says the cause was likely a child playing with fire.

EFD says there were no injuries, but one adult and five children were displaced from the apartment.

“It is not uncommon for us to have fires this close to each other [but] within two blocks that’s a bit more unusual,” Michael Kane, district chief with the Westside Fire Department, said.
