People in Gibson County gathered on Thursday night to raise awareness of domestic violence.
The Gibson County Domestic and Sexual Violence Task Force hosted Flowers on the Lake in Lafayette Park. It’s an event to recognize domestic violence victims.
Rita Dougan’s daughter, Jessi, was a victim of domestic violence when she was murdered three years ago. Dougan says she’s raising awareness in honor of her daughter.
“It’s never going to happen to me, and it will happen to you,” said Dougan. “When we walked out of that restaurant that day, we had no idea that was going to be the last time we said goodbye or anything, but it can happen just that fast.”
In 2015, Gibson County Central Dispatch says they received close to 600 calls for domestic violence issues. Every year, domestic violence claims the lives of an estimated 68 Hoosiers.
