Former casino barge traveling on Ohio River through Tri-State

A barge that was once part of a floating complex that housed the Argosy Casino in Sioux City, Iowa is traveling on the Ohio River this week from Wood River, Ill. to Covington, Ky.

It's a 700-mile trip that will take about 10 days to complete.

BB Riverboats purchased the barge and is towing it to northern Kentucky, where it will be converted into a new event facility, catering operation, wharf, and business offices.

“This barge is three times the size of our existing facility moored on the Newport, Kentucky riverfront,” said Capt. Alan Bernstein, owner of BB Riverboats.

The barge, which measures 300 feet in length and 54 feet in width, will replace BB Riverboats’ current facility.

“We’ve outgrown our existing facility, which has been in operation since 1984, and with a new generation of our family actively involved in the business, we decided it was time to expand, update, and rebrand our operations to create new excitement and enthusiasm in BB Riverboats.”

Before being purchased by BB Riverboats, the barge was stored for nearly four years in a Wood River, Ill. Shipyard.

The barge will end up at Covington, Ky.
