Group Says They Were in Town as Missionaries When Stabbings Happened

More details are emerging about Evansville’s first homicide of 2017.

Ryan Connors, 36, of East St. Louis is being held in Lexington, KY on murder charges after being picked up early Saturday morning.

He allegedly stabbed two people, one fatally, at the Motel 6 on U.S. 41 in Evansville Friday night.

Police say Connors also stole the surviving victim’s van and abducted a mentally challenged man who was a part of their group.

Detectives say they are trying to figure out what prompted the stabbings, but they have learned the possible reason why the group was staying in Evansville.

“Their statement was that they are missionaries,” said Sgt. Jason Cullum, “We don’t know exactly what church or group that they are associated with but it’s something we’ll look into. As far as the criminal case goes, it really doesn’t have a big impact on that.”

Connors is still in the Fayette County Jail, pending extradition back to Evansville.
