Health officials warn of illness risk connected to teen vaping

INDIANAPOLIS (WEHT) – The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) issued an Indiana Health Alert Network (IHAN) Notification to local health departments about the potential health risks of vaping among adolescents.

The ISDH said the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Illinois Department of Health have both reported clusters of severe respiratory illnesses seen in teenagers and young adults who have reported vaping in the weeks and months prior to the onset of illness.

As of August 2, 11 cases were confirmed in Wisconsin and three cases in Illinois.

Officials said it’s not currently known what specific products or chemicals may be linked to the illnesses.

Patients experienced the following symptoms:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
