HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – A Henderson County golf course reopens later this month, after closing for three years.
The Bridge’s Golf Course of Henderson is located on the site of the former Players Club.
It opens July 24.
Since this course closed a few years ago, the only activity seen here has been the grass growing. But in just a few weeks, that activity will be replaced by golfers driving and putting on these greens.
“I think everybody is going to be real happy to see it back open,” says Kevin Doane of K & J Course Management, who is operating the course for the city of Henderson.
After closing in 2016, this course had a cloudy future. When it reopens on July 24th, those clouds will go away.
We want to see everybody come in this door and walk away, and say, ‘Man it was a great time to go out there,” Doane says.
Doane says they’ve spent $500,000 so far rebuilding the clubhouse and course.
“Greens were completely gone,” Doane recalled, describing the course’s conditions before they renovated it. “They were full of weeds, trees, saplings, whatever. Tee boxes were the same. We sprayed most of that out.”
“It’s amazing how much we’ve done since November,” adds Bill Rendall, PGA Director of Golf for The Bridges.
The city of Henderson bought the course last year, and made a deal with K & J to run it. Rendall says some of the improvements will help stabilize the course conditions after severe weather.
“It will survive some a lot of the weather conditions that it couldn’t back then. We dug out the lake, so we have enough water to produce and keep track and keep everything alive in the future,” he says.
Rendall also says workers still must finish more than a dozen bunkers and clean up other sections before they open.
“There’s a lot of things that we can help out in the community now, and there’s a lot of people in the Tri-State that really love this layout that are happy we are coming back,” Rendall adds.
Course managers say they hope to attract more city and state tournaments here in the coming years.
Golfers can start teeing off at The Bridges at 7 a.m. on July 24.
