Home Goes Up in Flames Shortly After Owners Leave

Local News

A home in western Dubois County is destroyed following an afternoon fire.

It started just before 2 p.m. Wednesday on Sapphire Drive near the Shiloh Cemetery – south of Ireland.

Fire crews from both Jasper and Ireland Fire Departments were called out to fight the blaze.
When firefighters arrived, they say the house was engulfed in flames.

No one was home at the time. The homeowner told NNDC she had just left with her daughter for a doctor’s appointment.

“To be called at the doctor to say your house is burning is… I just can’t even wrap my head around it right now,” said homeowner Kathy Kugler, “But I’m so thankful that none of us were inside is the only thing I can ask. I’m thankful for the people trying to save anything. I’m told we’re not gonna save anything, but it’s stuff, so as long as we have our family we’ll be fine.”

A dog was inside, but able to get out.
No word yet on what started that fire.
