How did Grippo’s potato chips end up in the Tri-State?

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Grippo’s Potato Chips – the Tri-State knows them well. And the company is turning 100 years old this year.

Grippo’s has only been in the Tri-State since the late 1970s.

But have you ever wondered how the scrumptious snack came to the region?

Well, thanks to Alan and Kris Proctor, Grippo’s is now every bit a part of Evansville as the brain sandwich.

The Proctor’s story, Kris says, is a bit like a Hallmark movie.

“It’s kind of like a Hallmark movie, it started out really tough and it ended up really great.”

With a little foresight into what cooking habits were going to look like, Alan had an idea about starting his own business and he talked Kris into it.

“He took me to the grocery store…”

With a borrowed car and some borrowed money, it was time to head to Cincinnati.

“We didn’t have 2 nickels to rub together. We borrowed a car and some money to buy our first order of chips.”

And with that, Grippo’s have become a staple in Evansville and the region.
