How to stay healthy during cold and flu season

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) Cold and flu season is in full swing, and everyone wants to know how to avoid getting sick.

Natural supplements like Elderberry, a natural immune booster, sells in bunches this time of year at local places like Adele’s Naturally.

“Elderberry is always one of our most items in cold and flu season because of it’s history to help boost the immune system,” said store manager Jordan Fink. Vitamin C and Echinacea are also popular choices, according to Fink.

Dr. William Thompson of Deaconess Family Medicine recommends simple practices like hand washing as the best way to avoid getting sick.

“Hand washing sounds simple, but it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent sickness,” said Thompson.

Both Fink and Thompson agree the start to a healthy immune system begins with good overall health, pointing to things like a balanced diet, moderate exercise, and getting plenty of rest.
