Illinois election officials say over 700 former inmates may have had registrations wrongly canceled

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WEHT) – According to state officials, the Illinois State Board of Elections notified 59 local election authorities that 774 former inmates of the Illinois Department of Corrections may have had their voter registrations erroneously canceled due to a data-matching error.

The individuals were incorrectly categorized as currently incarcerated, according to election officials.

The State Board of Elections has worked to identify the affected individuals and local offices have been notified so that registrations can be reviewed for reinstatement before the start of early voting on February 6.

The problem was identified in November 2019.

The following election jurisdictions have been notified:
