ILLINOIS (WEHT) – Illinois’s gas tax officially starts today.
The gas tax will go up from 19 cents to 38 cents per gallon.
Money from the higher tax will help pay for a $45 billion infrastructure plan.
Some drivers support it, but others call it unnecessary.
“I think it could be a good thing if we are reassured that the money would go in the right places and do the right things. I think it’s a good thing. It could generate some money and help us out.”
“I don’t think our governor knew exactly what he was looking at, or reading, or even understood. I think there should’ve been more studying about it.”
The increase leaves Illinois with the second highest gas tax in the country.
