ILLINOIS (AP) – The federal government is giving Illinois big money to improve maternal health.

Illinois is getting $450,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Illinois Department of Public Health will use the money to find ways to reduce the number of women and babies who die during or shortly after pregnancy.

A state review found black women in Illinois are six times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than white women.

More than 70% of Illinois’ pregnancy-related deaths were preventable.
