Illinois troopers help save heart

(WEHT) – An Illinois family is thankful some state troopers were in the right place at the right time.

The troopers responded to what they thought was a simple flat tire on the side of I-55 near Des Plaines.

When they got there, they found out the car was an organ transplant vehicle with a medical team on board, carrying a heart.

The troopers loaded the heart and the doctors into their car and drove them to the hospital.

Hearts have a four to six-hour window for transplant and the medical team had already been on the road for three hours when they got the flat tire.

The hospital said the transplant was successful and the patient is recovering.
