Jasper Man Now Facing Murder Charges in Toddler’s Death

Local News

(News Now Dubois County) A 21-year-old Jasper man is now charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend’s toddler last year.

In December of 2014, investigators say 17-month old Xavier Miller was left with his mother’s boyfriend, Charles Hopf, 21,  while she was working.

Police say the child’s aunt took him to the hospital when she noticed he had a number of injuries, including burn and bite marks on his body.

Xavier died the next morning because of what authorities described as ‘severe brain injuries’.

Hopf was originally charged with aggravated battery causing death, but according to our media partner, News Now Dubois County, those charges have been now been upgraded to murder.

” We’d always had filing a second count of murder under consideration,” said Dubois Co. Prosecutor Anthony Quinn, “We felt at this point it was an appropriate time as we’ve been preparing and nothing has changed our minds”

An initial trial date has been set for Feb.1.
