JASPER, Ind. (WEHT) – Jasper Police are investigating an email scam that uses a priest’s name.
On Wednesday evening, police received word that an email scam has been circulating around using Father Ray Brenner’s name.

Police say the emails are headline; “Many Blessings” were sent from rev.rabrenner@gmail.com, which they say isn’t Fr. Brenner’s email.

The message says, “Hello, How are you? I need a favor from you. Email me back when you get this message. Many Blessings, Sent from my iPhone.”

If you responded, police say the next message asks you to get $300 in gift cards, then scratch the backs to expose the card number, photograph it and forward it to the email or text the number.

Again, police want to make sure residents understand, this was not Father Ray Brenner.

Police are concerned about this scam because Fr. Brenner is a trusted member in the community, and some might respond without questioning it further.

If you have responded and forwarded pictures or cards, you’re asked to stop by the police station to file a report.

Father Brenner extends his appreciation to the 120 Facebook members who shared this information within two hours, possibly saving others from being taken advantage of.
