Jury selection begins in Union County double murder trial

Local News

UNION COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) – The trial of a man charged in a double murder more than two years ago started on Tuesday morning, beginning with jury selection.

Joevionte Sims faces two counts of complicit murder and one count of complicity to burglary.

The charges stem from the shooting deaths of Caesarre Rapier and George Black Jr. in January of 2017 at a home in Morganfield.

Another defendant, Clarence Smith, pleaded guilty last month and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Charges in this case against Keyontae McGuire have been dropped.

The trial is bringing extra attention and extra security to the Union County Courthouse.

An extra metal detector was installed on the ground floor, below the courtroom entrance.

Extra security guards and deputies are also staffed for the trial.

Sheriff Mickey Arnold said county courts make the request to state officials if they believe extra security is necessary.

Sheriff Arnold said the extra metal detector hasn’t been requested at the courthouse for a long time.
