Kentucky ranks third in largest unemployment rise due to pandemic

(WEHT) – The U.S. unemployment rate continues to rise, with roughly 30.3 million Americans now having lost their jobs since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Kentucky now has the third highest increase in unemployment due to the pandemic, according a recent WalletHub study.

Kentucky is experiencing a 4650.00% increase in the number of unemployment insurance initial claims between the weeks of March 16, 2020 to April 20, 2020 compared to the weeks of March 18, 2019 to April 22, 2019.

Additionally, the 90,824 unemployment claims in Kentucky for the week of April 20, 2020 show an increase of 5,192.77% compared to the same week last year (1,716 claims).

In terms of the other states in the area, Indiana ranks 14th and Illinois ranks 39th on the list.
