KENTUCKY (WEHT) – Chester Thomas grew up in a small coal mining town in kentucky, dreaming of someday having a horse in the Derby. This week, that dream is his reality, as his horse By My Standards gets set to race in the 145th Kentucky Derby.
“If you don’t say this is where you want to be or don’t dream this is where you want to be, you’re lying,” said Thomas, who now lives in Madisonville.
Thomas, who remembers going to Ellis Park as a six-year-old, says this week is something he never actually thought would become a reality.
“You always dream about it, you think about it, but do you really think it’s going to happen? I mean when you really go back and look at the numbers, it takes so much luck,” said Thomas. “It’s just special.”
By My Standards enters the race in the 3 spot, opening at 15-1 odds. Trainer Bret Calhoun says he believes By My Standards has a real shot to win on Saturday.
“I’ve been doing this for over twenty-five years, and you always dream to get to this point, but I’ve never been one just to want to be a participant, I wanted to come with a horse we could win with,” said Calhoun. “We think he’s actually got a chance to win it.”
The 145th Kentucky Derby is set for 5:50 CT on Saturday.
