Man accused of causing deadly crash booked in Vanderburgh Co. Jail

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The man police say is responsible for the accident that killed Darla Smith in February has been booked into jail.

54-year-old William Buckman is being held at the Vanderburgh County Jail on a $15,000 bond.

72-year-old Darla Smith was killed when police say Buckman crashed into her vehicle.

Smith was taken to the hospital where she died.

Police say Buckman was high on meth and pot when he crashed into her vehicle.

Darla J. Smith owned a bakery for nearly 40 years. Smith owned Daily’s Bakery on North Main Street in Evansville.

According to Daily’s Bakery’s website, the business has been family owned and operated for three generations.

Kelley Coures says Smith was a huge part of the North Main Street Project.
