EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — The man police say shot and killed another last week now sits behind bars.
“I came home and there were cops across the street,” said a neighbor Monday. “Someone got murdered.”
Brandon Brown, 38, is in the Vanderburgh County Jail. Police say he shot Corey Hughes in the head.
Police records paint an ugly picture of an encounter Friday morning. It happened on East Maryland Street, near North Garvin around 7:30 a.m.
At least one neighbor, who doesn’t want his name used in this story, says it’s like a normal day in Evansville.
“I mean it’s happened,” he said. “It happens everywhere, just an unfortunate event, really.”
According to police records, a .380 spent casing was on the floor and shoe impressions in blood were found in Hughes’ home.
Police say Brown’s car was caught on a security camera leaving the home Friday morning.
Brown lives on West Louisiana street, less than a mile from Hughes. Detectives found Brown there, and a .380 handgun was found in his car, along with blood.
Brown told detectives Hughes swung at him with a knife, cutting his finger. Brown said he blacked out and “heard a bang.” Next, he told police he remembered leaving the house when he realized what happened.
According to police records, investigators did not find a knife at the crime scene.
Brown said he threw a gun in a river and burned his clothes.
“I don’t know exactly the whole story, it’s not my business to know, I go to work every day and do what I can and hope for the best,” the neighbor said. “I keep my head low and hopefully it doesn’t happen again.”
Brown faces a murder charge and is a previously convicted felon. He is scheduled to be in court later this week.
“I’ve lived here 10 years and never had a problem,” added the neighbor. “I’m just going to keep on doing what I’ve been doing.”
Some neighbors believe that is just another day.
